When Bihar's "untouchable's" children could not get a space in mainstream schools, Sudha Varghese, founder of Nari Gunjan, created a school just for them. Her tireless work with the Musahar's (rat eaters) of Bihar won her a Padma Shri.
About Sudha Varghese:
Sudha Varghese, Founder, Nari Gunjan. From privileged beginnings to championing the downtrodden, Sudha Varghese, or "didi" as she is known to the Musahar community, chose the path less traveled. Working in the hinterlands of Bihar, she is determined to empower women and girls from the most disenfranchised segments of society through her organization, Nari Gunjan. Today, this voice of empowerment echoes across two Prerna schools and 97 alternative education centers that prepare children to join the regular school system, impacting more than 40,000 children since we first set forth on her mission. In 2006, Sudha Varghese was awarded the Padma Shri for her service and work in promoting social justice.
