Every good nether has a portal incident in the overworld, without fail. I barely even mess up portals :(.
TLDR: I saw the backwards door and stronghold and falsely assumed that the correct part of the stronghold was just a small hallway loop. This wasn't a bad assumption in theory, but since my pre-emptive pointed generally to the right (very vaguely because i only had like one frame of good spike) I should have committed more.
