In this Studio Visit video, presented collaboratively with Deichtorhallen Hamburg on the occasion of their group exhibition ‘States of Rebirth,’ Isaac Chong Wai discusses his two artworks featured in the show as well as his broader multidisciplinary practice, which is informed by personal experiences of systemic violence.
In his series ‘Rehearsed, Mirrored,’ Wai captures movements from his performance rehearsals by etching their traces onto mirror and glass panels, revealing the emotional interconnectedness of bodies. In ‘Falling Reversely,’ the artist’s seven-channel video installation and performance, dancers embody resistance by reenacting in reverse the documented movements of individuals falling after violent racist attacks in public spaces.
Curated by Nadine Isabelle Henrich, ‘States of Rebirth’ examines the correlation between the body, movement and societal structures in physical and digital spaces through a focus on documentary and conceptual projects in contemporary photography. The exhibition is on view at PHOXXI in Hamburg, Germany until August 17, 2025.
