From: Blackhawks Over Los Angeles (2007)
Lyrics:
Slow down
These chemicals won't take you anywhere
So let the smoke go down and fill the room
As you look at me for something else to blame
Breathe in deep as the poison fills your lungs
It's nights like these that make mornings a hope will never come
So hold your breath and follow me
Clockwork devices are all we'll ever be
So you do your dance, obliterating everything you see
And I do my best to waste it all away
This machine replicates and hums along
The medication rages but the high is all the same
Just a walking catastrophe now
Crashing into you
So it all goes up flames erasing what will never be
And we'll do it all again tomorrow
So it goes and now it's gone
The life we choose is how we'll fall
The way we destroy is the art of it all
This portrait illustrates what you made me out to be
These colors never run, they only fade in time
I've turned to see your reaction
And what I thought it would be
From somewhere in the distance
I hear the sirens scream
Dancer, I remember the night you set this place on fire
With you out there in the middle of the room
Sitting pretty but you know you have
No defense, you have no defense
As we both go down in flames
You hold your breath and wonder why
No defense, you have no defense
Then you do your dance, obliterating everything in sight
So it goes and now it's gone
The life we choose is how we'll fall
The way we destroy is the art of it all
This portrait illustrates what you made me out to be
These colors never run, they only fade in time

From: Deceit (1981)
Lyrics:
Sleep, sleep, sleep, go to sleep
Sleep, go to sleep
You are now in a deep sleep
(In-store promises)
Endless possibilities, a life of ease
A life cocooned in a routine of food
(Stimulus and response!)
Softness is a thing called comfort
(It doesnt cost much to keep in touch)
We never forget you have a choice
Possibilities in store, a taste of paradise
Success on a plate for you, endless promises
(Sleep, sleep, sleep, go to sleep)
Sleep, go to sleep
You are now in deep sleep
Well, what do we expect?
Paper hats, or maybe even roses?
The sounds of explosions
Oh no, is this any easier?
Comfy - Climax - Ego
Decorations up or down
The sound of explosions
What does this tune signify?
What is its meaning?
Is it really that straightforward or are our ears beyond words?
From Charles Hayward’s liner notes for the 2016 vinyl reissue of Deceit:
“The lyrics for this [Sleep] slowly accumulated in my notebook, harvested from TV commercials. The tune was the first I ever wrote, 12 years old. We recorded this in one session.”
“Paper Hats” was a holdover from the sessions for This Heat’s Health and Efficiency EP. It can be heard in its original version as “Rimp Romp Ramp” on Made Available: the John Peel Sessions.
This is the only This Heat song with lyrics penned by Gareth Williams. This Heat - Sleep/Paper Hats](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/QRdU20F1Y0k/mqdefault.jpg)

From: One More Time With Feeling (2016)
Lyrics:
One, two, three, four
Come on, the morning comes
The jittery TV
Out of the window, this morning comes
Nothing is for free
A black shadow falling here
[incomprehensible] like a narrow little bed
Glowing white like fire
And I call out the window
Oh, down to the sea
The echo comes back empty
Cause nothing is for free
