Structural biology has revealed how the BAX protein is activated. The blue and yellow region shows where BH3-only proteins transiently bind BAX to release its 'tail' (red) that anchors BAX into mitochondrial membrane.

This research helped to reveal how the transient ‘hit-and-run’ interaction between BAX and BH3-only proteins could be an important trigger for cell death.
