Lecture 9, by Dr Martin Rawson, in the series "Steel Research: A global journey", organised by Adreil Wong, Dominik Dziedzic and Steve Ooi to mark the retirement of Harry Bhadeshia.

The main engine shaft in a large aeroengine is made from steel. Martin Rawson traces first the history of the development of superclean alloys that can withstand the onerous conditions of an aeroengine. He then goes on to show the latest developments in aeroengine steels.
