Puzzles don't necessarily require a lot of mathematical machinery -- some of the best can be solved with a clever point of view, or a simple but subtle insight. Puzzles also get students thinking out of the box, and are a good antidote to some of the rather routine aspects of learning arithmetic.

In this video we look at some puzzles arising in measurement --weighing things, and using a (pan) balance. These kinds of puzzles are not only fun, but they introduce students to the idea of balancing both sides of a system --just the kind of thing they will be doing with equations later in their schooling.

Some of the puzzles here are quite classical, others connect to the powers of two puzzles we discussed in our last video. But there are also perhaps some surprises here.
