Strawberries—what next after they’ve finished fruiting?
Here's how I manage them here at Homeacres to keep plants productive and save time.
Once the harvest ends, plants start to throw out runners and crowd the space. I cut them right down to ground level, then spread a layer of homemade compost. This discourages excess runners and sets the plants up well for next year.
These Marshmello plants are four years old now and still fruiting beautifully, and Florence—still cropping—is in its second year. Cutting back and mulching keeps them healthy without needing to replant.
If you want new plants, you can allow a few runners to root in the compost. Just be mindful not to overcrowd—less is often more with strawberries.
