In the heart of 19th-century Vienna, one man reigned undisputed over the music scene: Johann Strauss II, the ‘Waltz King’. But to rise to the throne, he had to defy his father’s wishes. Johann Strauss I was a famous composer and conductor. However, he envisioned a future in banking for his son. Johann Jr., however, paid him no mind and formed his own orchestra aged only 19, quickly winning over the city. He popularized the waltz, transforming it from a simple peasant dance to a staple of Viennese high society. Such was his popularity that The Blue Danube' waltz became the unofficial anthem of Austria.
