After a move from New York to Milan forced her to slow down, JJ Martin, the founder of La DoubleJ, embarked on a spiritual journey into Greek mythology that has become a passion project – both personally and for her label. ‘Although I had studied Greek mythology in high school, I first learned about the goddesses from a female archetype standpoint from my naturopath in Milan,’ she explains. ‘When he talked about Persephone, a lightbulb went off in my head and I was completely captivated.’ In view of any satisfactorily powerful depiction of the goddesses, Martin set about creating them for La DoubleJ. ‘One day I got to the office and sat down with my team and just said, “OK, we need to bring these goddesses to life”.’ The resultant vibrant illustrations adorn a comprehensive collection including clothing, accessories, cushions and plates with each piece accompanied by a card to explain who the goddess is. ‘My hope is that someone might fall in love with the picture of the goddess, because essentially as humans we’re superficial so we engage visually first, but then they might become interested and dig a little deeper to find out more about the goddess. And maybe themselves.’
