Today we’re talking about sideburns—one of those tiny grooming details that makes a massive difference in how put-together you look. Sideburns frame the face and finish a hairstyle, but when they’re done wrong, they quietly sabotage your entire look. I’d honestly say about 90% of guys I see have messed them up in one way or another.  Sideburns should hit about the middle of the ear, have a slight angle, blend smoothly into your hairstyle and beard, and never be rushed. Slow, methodical trimming makes all the difference. When your sideburns are done right, your face looks more balanced, your jawline looks stronger, and your hairstyle actually feels finished. Nail this small detail, and you instantly level up your grooming game—without changing anything else. So today, I’m breaking down the biggest sideburn mistakes, what to avoid, and how to make sure yours actually elevate your style instead of dragging it down.

1. Not Having Sideburns at All- Unless you’re rocking a full skin fade or buzzing your hair and beard to the same length, you need sideburns. Completely removing them creates an unfinished, awkward transition that throws off your entire hairstyle.

2. Cutting Them Too Short- Ultra-short sideburns—or worse, shaving them off at the top of the ear—are one of the most common and most damaging mistakes. The sweet spot is around the middle of the ear. Anything higher looks harsh, dated, and honestly kind of sloppy.

3. Cutting Them Blunt Instead of Angled- Blunt sideburns are a hard no. Always add a slight angle. That subtle tilt follows the jawline, elongates the face, and instantly makes your grooming look intentional instead of accidental.

4. Failing to Blend with Your Beard or Hair - If you’ve got a beard, especially with short hair or a shaved head, stopping it abruptly at the ear makes it look fake. Sideburns should be faded and blended, not chopped. The goal is a seamless transition between hair, sideburns, and beard.

5. Making Them Too Thin or Mismatched- Super-thin, over-carved sideburns are outdated and weird-looking. Your sideburn thickness should follow your natural growth and match your hairstyle. Longer hair can support slightly longer burns; shorter hair needs cleaner, proportional ones.
