I see Gem as trying to cure them, and kinda just keeps them around. She trusts them and doesn't run away, so in turn, the infected aren't hostile towards her and treat her as one of their own.
Also Lizzie and Jimmy are the least hostile, they have their moments, but for the most part are very docile
