During this event, I will give a talk similar to and covering the same ground as the invited talk I provided at Wyoming Stoic Camp 2024, focused on Stoicism and Grief. There are a number of misconceptions about how Stoics view emotions, particularly grief, that stem from careless or too partial readings of actual Stoic texts and thinkers. Close attention to classical Stoic discussions and advice about grief, loss, sadness, and grieving reveals that their views are much more complex, humane, and useful for us in the present.
In the course of this talk, we will reference and discuss passages from Cicero, Arius Didymus, Epictetus, and Seneca. You may find it particularly useful to read Cicero's Tusculan Disputations book 3 and Seneca's Letters 63 and 99.
