Stock car racing at Santry in Dublin.

The Irish Stock Car Racing Club have an oval shaped dirt track near Santry Stadium in north Dublin. Stock car racing meetings at Santry draw crowds of up to 2,000 every Sunday.

A stock car race usually has 15 to 20 cars. In a sport where anything goes, the rules of the road do not apply. The idea is that each driver tries to win using whatever methods necessary. If the car in front overturns or flounders on the track, the drivers behind can spin, crash or ram the driver.

There are some spectacular crashes, leaving one car in flames. Drivers are protected by rollbars to prevent the roof from caving in, seat belts, crash helmets, and goggles. With this protection, the driver seldom gets hurt.
