The horrible Stink Bugs (Shield Bugs) are back. And they are destroying the citrus trees in our backyard again. I investigate another method of controlling these invasive stinky pests using dishwashing liquid sprayed onto the Stink Bugs and whole tree. My mix is 1/3 detergent to 2/3 water (without vinegar).

I know from a previous YouTube video that an amazing way to destroy a huge infestation of Stink Bugs is to use a flamethrower or weed dragon over the tree to eliminate the Stink Bugs and the eggs laid under the leaves. Sure the tree will suffer but it will regrow and develop fruit once the Stink Bugs are removed. Using a flamethrower is for me a proven method.

Another resident in my suburb brought up a Stink Bug problem they had on their trees and the idea of using a detergent was said to be effective. I had to find out myself and this video looks at the effect a dishwashing liquid has on Stink Bugs. It's very interesting to see the knockout effect that happens. But this method isn't as selective as I would like it to be.

I go back to the trees a few days later to investigate the aftermath of using a flamethrower Vs detergent as a control method. Looking at the effect on Stink Bug eggs and baby Stink Bugs is quite interesting. It sets up argument points for both styles of pest control.

The Stink Bugs you see in this video are Musgraveia Sulciventris which is a large stink bug found in Australia, sometimes known as the bronze orange bug. It is considered a pest, particularly to plants in the citrus group. Bronze orange bugs suck the sap from trees, which causes the flowers and fruit to fall. The bronze orange bugs are first found on trees in late winter. Mating takes place between late November through early March. Each mating pair takes 3 to 5 days to produce 10 to 14 eggs. The female lays up to four clutches of eggs and deposits them on the undersurface of a leaf.
