He shares that many practices in business are done out of habit, without anyone really understanding why. Jobs recalls how he would always ask "why" when people explained processes to him, and often the response he received was "that's just the way it's done." He emphasizes that people don’t think deeply about these routines, leading to inefficiencies.
✎ Jobs gives a specific example from Apple’s early days. He explains that while building the Apple I, they knew the exact costs involved. However, when they transitioned to factory production with the Apple II, they encountered the concept of "standard cost," which was adjusted at the end of each quarter based on variances. Jobs questioned this process, only to find out that it stemmed from a lack of accurate information systems. When they later designed the Macintosh factory, they were able to get rid of these outdated methods by using better controls to track costs in real-time.
✎ He concludes by saying that much of business is based on "folklore," where things are done simply because they've always been done that way. For Jobs, the key to success was questioning everything, thinking deeply, and working hard. By doing so, he believes anyone can learn the ropes of business quickly, because, as he puts it, “it’s not rocket science.”
