Meet Lindarbakki — one of Borgarfjörður's most recognizable little houses 🏠
Tucked into the seafront of Bakkagerði village in Borgarfjörður Eystri, this small red turf house was built around 1899, with most of its interior added in 1934. The basement — where an old well still sits — is the oldest part of the house.
Lindarbakki wasn't always alone. Many similar turf houses once stood along this same seafront, but as building methods changed, most were torn down. Today, Lindarbakki is the one that remains 🌿
Its last year-round residents, Jóhanna Jóhannesdóttir and her son Jóhannes, lived here until 1973. Later, in 1979, Elísabet "Stella" Sveinsdóttir and her husband Skúli bought the house and used it as their summer home for years afterward. In 2019, Stella gave Lindarbakki to the municipality, and it's been kept exactly as she left it ever since.
