On September 27, 2025, Railtown 1897 State Historic Park in Jamestown, CA, put on a steam photographer's special which consisted of dinner, a ride on the train behind historic Sierra No. 3, a 4-6-0 that earned its keep on the Sierra when it was one of the area's key transportation modes, and also became a world-famous movie star, appearing in dozens of television and silver screen classics.
The train ride was complete with several photo run-bys in two locations, and what made it even more special is that the locomotive was turned to face westward. Locomotives on this railroad face east, as a rule, so having the locomotive turned the other way around made for some very rare photo opportunities!
The train made its typical run out to Rock Siding, but also made photo run-by stops at Quartz Junction and Rogers Cut.
When the train arrived back at Jamestown, the attendees were treated to a roundhouse and blacksmithing demonstration.
The evening was capped off by a night photo session, where No. 3 was staged on the whisker track at the roundhouse with just enough light on it to make for some dramatic shots! The grand finale was when No. 3 pulled No. 28, whose headlight was rigged to be on, even though the 28 was not operational at the time, out of the roundhouse stall to pose side-by-side with No. 3!
