This is the auxiliary condenser condensate pump on a museum ship. All too often I see these poor pumps abused and misused by folks that do not understand reciprocating steam condensing pumps and plants. Pounding away so loudly that they can be heard outside their ships. Unnecessarily abusing the poor things, and shortening the lifespan of their components. These pump should only be running when the main engine is not in regular motion (as the main has the main condenser, condensate pump, and all auxiliaries can be routed to it. These pumps don't need to run much faster than this to maintain vacuum, and a desirable condensate discharge temperature (approximately 160°F to avoid reabsorption of oxygen from the atmosphere. Low enough to not cause priming of feed pumps).
Cooling water discharge temperature should have no bearing on setting pump speed. Only the condensate discharge temperature should. Those that say otherwise are misinformed.
A pounding pump is an âbusëd pump. Report pump âbusërs to your local steam expert... and if they dismiss your concerns, perhaps they don't know as much as they let on...
