Visitors to Staunton State Park in Jefferson County got to see helicopter logging firsthand in October. The helicopters are being used to thin parts of the forest in the popular park as part of a forest and watershed health project that will also reduce the risk of high-intensity wildfires. Crews are removing beetle-infested and diseased trees and thinning overly dense forest stands. The result will be a healthier forest that is more resilient to fires, beetle outbreaks and other stressors. The park is in Denver Water’s collection area which is why we helped fund the project through our From Forest to Faucets partnership with the U.S. Forest Service, the Colorado State Forest Service, the Natural Conservation Service and the Colorado Forest Restoration Institute.
