* N.B. In 2 Thessalonians 2:7, St. Paul uses the Greek word 'katechon' to describe something or someone that 'restrains' the coming of the man of sin, the son of perdition (antichrist). St. Paul' s audience clearly knew what or who this was, but the Catholic Church has never issued a definitive teaching identifying it. Various saints and theologians have suggested the 'katechon' is the Catholic Church, the Catholic Mass, St. Michael, the Pope, the Holy Roman Empire, or even a Christian Emperor.
