This video is where I am, at 57 years old, and learning Spanish for 3 years. Now, I'm about to start Dreaming Spanish at 150 hours/A2/Intermediate, and see what happens from here. After being born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, I tried to learn Spanish from a great book one time until I lent the book to someone who never gave it back. My friends were black, Italian, Jewish, Puerto Rican, Dominican, Panamanian, Trinidadian, Jamaican, and the list goes on. Needless to say, I've been hearing the accent, mostly curse words, most of my life.
In 2005, I moved to Atlanta, Georgia, and it wasn't until my daughter told me she was learning three languages on Duolingo (Spanish, French, and Mandarin) that I said, I'm going to learn Spanish once and for all! So in July 2022, I began. Duolingo, the Learncraft Spanish, which started losing me around episode 35 (se, le, lo, etc), and Qroo's Crew course (that worked great but was hard to listen to lessons while driving). Qroo gets you speaking sentences fast! There have been a few books (short stories in Spanish, Spanish for Dummies, 10 Minutes of Spanish a Day, Madrigal's Magic Key to Spanish, etc), but I'm not a reader. Now in December 2025, I'm listening to Patrrick Jackson's Learn to Speak Conversational Spanish Like an MF (currently on Book Two, Lesson 3).
However, even though native speakers constantly tell me I know a lot of Spanish, my understanding of them leads to them switching back to English because I have trouble understanding, and I'm translating in my head. So, based on countless YouTube review videos, the obvious answer is Dreaming Spanish, which should address my listening comprehension directly!
