Starting a garden has made me an infinitely better mom, and here’s how:
• It’s taught me a new level of patience. Sometimes I don’t see the fruits (or flowers) of my labor for over a year after I plant something. As someone who really struggles with patience this has been a huge shift for me. Realizing that tasks don’t need to have immediate results to be valuable has brought me so much peace.
• It’s helped me make peace with my kids getting dirty. I want to be the kind of mom that says “Clothes willl wash! Go have fun!” and the garden is the perfect place for me to practice letting go and letting them be kids.
• It’s gotten us all outside. Both my kids and I do so much better when we’ve gotten outside each day. It helps all of our mental health and staves off boredom and tantrums (me included!)
• It’s given me something to focus on for myself outside of motherhood. Having a habit that brings me so much joy outside of motherhood has been instrumental in filling my cup which in turn helps me serve my family better.
• It helps me slow down, work with my hands, and practice mindful food consumption. We’ve become so disconnected from the way of living and getting provision from the earth that it’s refreshing to bring it into my life and teach my kids about it too!
• It gives me a sense of accomplishment and the bouquets that I cut each week are an amazing form of self care!
Do you have a garden? If so, what’s your favorite thing to grow? And if not, what do you dream of growing one day?
