"The X-Wing. The icon of the rebel alliance starfighter corps and the fighter that killed the Death Star.
Several models of the x-wing exist, though the most common is the T-65B. Its name comes from its characteristic wings which take an "X" shape when locked into attack postion. Reconfiguring the wings in this manner slows the craft but gives it greater maneuverabilty, something greatly needed during dogfights. The X-Wing is incapable of firing its lasers with its wings locked shut. However, missiles, bomb, rockets, and torpedoes are not restricted in this manner. Moderate speed, a shield generator, and hyperdrive give the craft enough flexibility to be an excellent workhorse starfighter for the rebel alliance. A single astromech port allowed for a droid copilot to assist pilots and even repair the craft in mid-flight. As one might imagine, this is an invaluable thing to have in a protracted engagement.
Despite being the most famous rebel craft it was in fact originally designed for the Galactic Empire. However, defection of the design team as well as theft of the prototypes deprived the empire of their vehicle. By the time the empire was capable of producing the craft themselves it had become such a symbol of the rebellion that any thought of doing so was immediately discarded.
A couple major variants of the x-wing push its flexibility to the limits.
The Recon X-Wing, nicknamed the Snoopscoot, is a variant equipped for reconnaissance missions. A powerful sensor probe on the nose allows it to gather a remarkable amount of data in a short time span. A drawback of this design is its lack of missile tubes, forcing it to rely on lasers.
The tandem x-wing is a rarer variant that allows the fighter to hold two humanoid individuals. Upgraded engines and a beefier hull make it a hearty design. Drawback are that the extensive changes make it prone to maintenance issues and its less aerodynamic frame makes atmospheric flight rough.
The X-Wing has seen a remarkable amount of action for a starfighter design, operating well before the battle of yavin, through the defeat of the empire at jakku, and will likely continue to serve the new republic well into the coming age.
Notable Pilots of the X-Wing include Luke Skywalker, the pilot who delivered the killing blow to the first Death Star as well as Wedge Antilles, one of the few pilots known to have survived
the attacks on both battlestations."
