Back in the late 1990s, Star Trek super fan Masao Okazaki started creating fan products describing a conjectural history of Starfleet and the United Federation of Planets predating the original Star Trek series. [https://www.starfleet-museum.org/about.htm]
Eventually these products moved online, to a website called The Starfleet Museum [https://www.starfleet-museum.org/], and later Allen Rolfes came along and started doing deckplans to complement Masaos ship designs. While none of this is canon and it was all negated by Star Trek: Enterprise anyway it remains a fascinating exmple of both ship design and worldbuilding.
Come join Chris as he walks through the Museum and comments on all of the crunchy goodness he finds inside.
STARFLEET TACTICAL is the YouTube show where we talk about the intersection of naval history and science fiction, with some gaming occasionally thrown in for flavor. Outside the day job, Chris is a co-founder of BuNine (David Webers Honorverse analytic visualization team), and has also consulted with Chuck Gannon, Walter Hunt, Alec Peters, Tom Harlan, John Lumpkin, and others. His work has been featured by Baen Books, the US Naval War College Review, Foreign Policy, and the Discovery Channel. Since May 2020 hes been the co-host (with Pat Doyle) of Starfleet Tactical on the Ares Studio channel on YouTube. His hobbies are naval history, science fiction, and not speaking for his employer.

Last episode looked at the Belknap class strike cruiser by Todd Guenther, which was published in Starship Design and Ships of the Star Fleet. This week Chris looks at a derivative design, the Athabaska class exploration cruiser, as well as some variations. And since the Athabaska class incorporates a Knox class primary hull (itself expanded into the Miranda (or Avenger) class, well look at those, too.
(And next week, Chris will look at another aderivative design, the Ascension class dreadnought. And since the Ascension class is predicated on the old Franz Joseph idea of a dreadnought being a three nacelle design, well also looked at Franz Josephs design, Guenthers TMP-era version of it, and other three nacelle designs.)
