The Star Wars universe is a vast one, spanning multiple star systems and planets, each inhabited by humans and unique alien races. Few stories capture just how big this galaxy can be. The team at Bit Reactor is going to give it a shot with the upcoming Star Wars Zero Company. Led by Game Director and studio founder Greg Foertsch, formerly of Firaxis, Zero Company looks to adapt the tried-and-true XCOM tactics formula into a Star Wars narrative. I recently had a chance to play the game's first few hours, where I had the pleasure of meeting some new characters. I also learned quickly that, in true XCOM-like fashion, I shouldn't get too attached to many of them.
Star Wars Zero Company follows the story of a group of mercenaries for hire. The titular Zero Company has fallen on hard times, finding itself in need of credits, since (and stop me if you've heard this one before in Star Wars) the team is in financial debt to the Hutt cartel. The Republic remains in the middle of a bitter war with the Separatist Alliance, but a mysterious cult aligned with the Separatists has risen. It is known as the Infinite Coil, led by Kundri Fathom, where every one of its members is infected with an unnatural affliction known only as the Shadow Plague. To face this threat, the Republic leadership needs more than the Republic's Clone Trooper army. They need people who are unconventional, unpredictable, and (most importantly for the Republic) expendable.
