This is a trailer I edited together for the highly anticipated seventh installment in the Star Wars series, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens", which is set for release a week away from today. The trailer, which was edited completely from scratch, features many pieces of footage from the film's trailers, TV Spots, and featurettes that have been released over the past year. My hope was to not throw together every all of the footage I could find, as the trailer doesn't feature every single piece of footage released for the film. You may notice that there are various shots you've probably seen in one or more advertisements for the film that don't appear in this trailer at all, while there are also some scenes that may be new to you as well. Undoubtedly, making this trailer has been quite a journey in itself. Every once in a while, I make a trailer for a major film set to come out in the near future. This is the third time I have done so, and many changes have been brought about. Instead of doing what many other people have done by creating a trailer through splicing previously existing ones together, I edited this trailer completely from scratch, putting together all the individual pieces of footage, sound effects, and music.
The seventh installment in the "Star Wars" series is perhaps the most anticipated film of all time. Granted, it has been ten years since the previous (technically, third) installment came out in 2005, but in reality it has been over thirty years since the 'last' installment, "Return of the Jedi", was released in 1983. This makes "The Force Awakens" a continuation of the story that seemingly ended thirty years ago, which is something that makes this film so interesting. Much of the original cast is returning to play iconic characters - some of whom have much changed since their last appearances.
One of my goals with this trailer was to give it the proper tone. A theme of the film seems to be the rise of a new generation that falls into the resurgence of an ancient conflict, with the main cast featuring three new characters who are accompanied by characters from the original trilogy. The film aims to set up the series for a new generation while linking it with the original trilogy as well. I edited the trailer not only to create an adventurous and intense feel - but to also give a more ancient tone as a homage to the returning characters, and to connect their part in the storyline with that of the younger cast members. For instance, I aimed to strengthen this connection with the scenes featuring the new characters alongside Han Solo and Chewbacca.
A major aspect of making the trailer was finding the proper music. Originally, I was going to use a piece by Twelve Titans Music called "Dust and Light", which was used in the final trailer for "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies". I stuck with it for about a week, but I eventually decided against using it due to its dark tone - something I didn't want the trailer to feature as a whole. I went on to test out various other pieces, but I was unsuccessful in finding anything. Finally, I came across a track by Superhuman called "Descendants", which caught my attention and struck me as being the perfect track to use for the trailer.
Perhaps one of the most notable portions of the trailer are, ultimately, its sound effects. I spent some time searching around for sound effects from the original Star Wars films to utilize in the trailer. Some of the sounds will definitely sound familiar, while others may not. In order to strengthen the trailer and make it more intense, my top goal was to give the sound effects the best role as possible and sync them in with the scenes and the music. In my previous trailers, I have barely, if at all, included any sound effects, which looking back didn't really bring out any of the scenes regardless of how good the music was. Here, I must admit that I am thoroughly pleased with how everything linked together to create a well-constructed trailer.
