Whilst running at high warp to aid an Earth colony in distress, the Enterprise is halted by a visit from Q. Boasting an irreverence for Captain Picard's motivation to complete his rescue mission, Q insists that mission take second place to a mission of his own; to explore how Commander Riker will behave once he has been given the power of the Q.

Facing a little skepticism from his colleages regarding his new abilities, not to mention his behaviour, Riker is presented with an opportunity to demonstrate to each member of the bridge staff that his powers can be applied positively.

We've all fantasised about what we'd wish for if we discovered the genie and this is Riker's chance to deliver on that. Of course the tremendous wisdom that our heroes embody makes it harder for Riker to push his gifts on them than he thought it would.

$Star Trek TNG Ira Gravess Consciousness Invades Datas Brain (Part 3 of 3) Season 2 Episode 6 Episode: The Schizoid Man Doctor Ira Graves, one of humaniys leading mind in the field of cybernetics is dying from an incurable illness. Keen on bridging the gap between man and machine, Graves has created a system, a process by which it is now possible to transfer the wealth of a persons knowledge into a computer; an achievement that he feels is a step closer to achieving immoratlity. Answering the distress call from Gravess world, an away team arrive to see if anything can be done to save Gravess life or at least make him comfortable. Unfortunately Doctor Graves dies before the away mission is even concluded. Shortly after departing Gravess world, Commander Datas personality starts to change, exhibiting traits that are not unlike those showcased aplenty by Ira Graves; is this simply mimicry on Datas part? - Of course not. Captain Picard connects the dots: It would appear that shortly before his death, Ira Graves not only achieved the successful migration of his knowledge into Datas brain, but his consciousness aswell. After unintentionally fracturing some bones in Kareen Brianons hand, the assault of Geordi LaForge and Captain Picard, Ira Graves [as Data] is finally convinced to give up Datas body. Data appears to be no worse for wear for having had this unusal experience. And what of Graves intellect? - Oh hes found a new home for sure. I have seen conversational materials on television, on the interweb regarding future advances in computer science. Whilst there is something of a consensus between a cross-section of these experts that the human brain is by far the most advanced computer on the planet, there are some who say that hardwarewise at least, the very fastest, the greatest number crunching computers that exist today do actually possess enough resourses and performance potential to approximate the rudements of human brain activity. Some even subscribe to the idea that computer science will mature to the point where a person will seek preservation for all time in a computer thats been appropriately configured to simulate the functions of the human mind. Of course all this daydreaming should be tempered with at least a little reality. - The task of transferring a mind from human to machine is if not far fetched, is certainly far reaching. And though today we may have enough hardware to reproduce the minds a small number of individuals, what software is making sense of all that chaos? - Windows 11?? And despite the fact that evolution has already gifted over 7.5-billion individuals on this planet with their own ultimate super computer in their heads, there are nonetheless a tremendous, a staggering, a collosal number of dumb asses out there.$
