The original Star Tours opened at Disneyland in 1987 and arrived at Walt Disney World’s Disney‑MGM Studios on December 15, 1989. It was groundbreaking — one of the first major collaborations between Disney and George Lucas, and one of the earliest large‑scale motion simulator attractions in the world.
Guests boarded the StarSpeeder 3000, piloted by the lovable but inexperienced RX‑24 (Captain Rex), voiced by Paul Reubens. The ride combined film footage, synchronized motion, and practical effects to create an experience that felt light‑years ahead of its time.
By the mid‑1990s, Star Tours had become a staple of Disney‑MGM Studios, and the 1996 holiday season captured the attraction at its peak — the original film, the original queue, and the original charm that fans still talk about today.
The ride operated in its classic form until 2010, when it was replaced by Star Tours – The Adventures Continue. But for many fans, this is the version that lives forever.
