Here's my theory for anyone curious, this is really only for people who've played Star Ocean 2, Star Ocean 3 and Valkyrie Profile. The world is Star Ocean is a simulation created by a corporation called Sphere. The head of Sphere are constantly updating their game, actually called "Eternal Sphere" rather than "Star Ocean", and they're removing and adding code indefinitely. Gabriel says things like "I'm erasing you" during the final boss, and the 10 Wise Men fade away like simulations when defeated, because it could be seen as the developers of Eternal Sphere deleting code. The 10 Wise Men could be seen as the embodiments of this deletion process. So Gabriel was doing what he was literally programmed to do. The developers of Eternal Sphere are benign in motive and don't know their creation is sentient. They also probably don't know their updates/deletion of code causes history altering events in the Eternal Sphere, such as Gabriel turning to the deletion of the universe. Remember how the guy we fought before Gabriel said he was bug filled and defective? Star Ocean 2 can be seen as a video game about a dead server being deleted, and the effects it has on the plot and characters of that world.

Now for Valkyrie Profile. So the universe of Star Ocean is a simulation created by the Sphere corporation. And in Star Ocean 2 and 3, there are Valkyrie Profile posters inside some of the buildings. This could mean Valkyrie Profile is another simulation by Sphere, or is an in-universe Eternal Sphere update or DLC, and the Valkyrie Profile posters are more than just easter eggs; rather than are Sphere advertising their next update/game. Loki destroying all of Midgard at the end of VP1, only for Lenneth to redo everything, could be seen as an instance of Sphere updating the game.
