Fan Made Gas Collector – Inspired by 21st century super tankers
Tl;dr
Gas Collection – similar to mining. Collect gasses, refine to fuel, or sell to refineries. Collecting gasses will require skills – similar to mining with few differences listed below. Starfarer exists in the game already + new fan made concept ship.
Process of Gas Collection
Find Gas Deposits, Collect, Compress and Store.
- Gasses unlike solids can be compressed. Compressing skill and knowledge will be required as different gasses will have different properties – (please see below Compression vs Stability)
- Gasses also, due to their properties can not be mixed while being collected. Ships have different zones designed to collect different gases separately. Starfarer has (2 Tanks), Pax Colligo has 12 tanks split into 3 zones. With current mining gameplay, Prospector or Mole (and ROC) mixes all minable resources in their sacks – with gasses would be different.
Different Gasses – Different Values – Different Properties
- First difference would be in values of different gasses. Abundant gasses would be cheaper, rare ones more expensive. Solar systems would differ – what is rare in one could be abundant on other.
- Second difference – Stability. Different gasses would react different to very level of compressions. Some could be compressed a lot, some would become “unstable” if compressed too much. Similar to quantanium – some might have time limits; some might be more “fragile” when compressed so extra caution is advised.
- Controlling pressure of gases – or simply – how much we collect into our tanks – would be similar to mining skills. How Much and How Fast collection of certain gasses will affect stability. Prior knowledge here would be required. Also, interesting spin (please see chart below) some gasses could be more “stable” in certain pressure levels (purple)
Economics.
Currently whole system is based on SCU – Standard Cargo Units. However, because I introduced a pressure and a variable: 1 SCU with 1 PSI, = 1 SGU Standard Gas Unit – (SGU would be 1 cubic meter of gas with 1 PSI pressure). However, 1 SCU with 20 PSI would be worth 20 SGU. Ships would still measure their tanks and storage space in SCU (in cubic meters) but Gas Prices and Economics would need SGU. Please see table below:
PSI as a unit can be modified to match more of the “sci-fi world” of star citizen – suggestions here are welcome 😊

Refineries
I am working on concepts of “floating gas refineries” around Crusader that would “mix gasses” and produce fuels. Basically, refineries 😊 stay tuned for some concept designs
Perhaps “Quick Wins” from developer point of view:
- Process would be like mining – collect + refine = product
- Gas deposits could be first same asteroids – but instead of floating “rocks” we would have floating “small clouds” characterized perhaps with different colors
- Scanning would work same as mining scanning – identifying gas
