“Living In This World Alone” is from SEARCHING, the long-awaited but only second album from the Staples Jr. Singers, the Mississippi family band behind 1975’s critically acclaimed When Do We Get Paid (Luaka Bop, 2022).

The origins of this record go back to the eighties when the singers had a recording session at the legendary Muscle Shoals studio, and then lost the tapes. While this isn’t a recreation of the album-that-never-was, those tapes were certainly on all of our minds in the fall of 2023, when the Staples Jrs. gathered in a single room church in Mississippi to record together. Time is an instrument here as much as the room tone.

“It was good to be able to go back,” said singer Annie Brown Caldwell, “and look back over our life. Some of the same songs that we had sung, those songs have a new meaning to me.”

Ms. Annie owns and runs a clothing store on Main Street in downtown West Point. If you find yourself in Mississippi, you best go visit.
