In early 1965, the American town of Selma became the centre of a national struggle for voting rights as Black residents faced entrenched barriers when attempting to register to vote. In the aftermath of 'Bloody Sunday', when Alabama state troopers violently dispersed peaceful marchers on Selma's Edmund Pettus Bridge, Martin Luther King Jr. returned to Selma to lead a renewed march that drew national attention.
The events in Selma in February and March 1965 would galvanise American public opinion, accelerate the civil rights movement, and help pave the way for the Voting Rights Act later that year. Presented here are three ITN special reports which, viewed together, tell the story of Selma as it unfolded and was recorded at the time.
