On Missing Children's Day 2021, we shed light on the over 3,000,000 children who have been ripped away from a parent within Japan, legally with the help of single custody laws in Japan, the only developed G8 Country with no joint custody.
Japan does not recognize joint custody laws as the lawyers and judges profit from it and receive up to 30% of child support payments until the child reaches 20 years of age! While it’s a gain for the lawyers and judges, this is a loss-loss situation for the children and parents affected by the single custody law.

On Day 4 of Vincents hunger strike, three Japanese mothers share how they have been unable to see the children they gave birth to for years due to Japans single custody law.
Because of this archaic law, some 200,0000 children lose a parent each year. Mothers, fathers, Japanese and non-Japanese are all affected.

France, Australia, the US, Germany, Russia, Korea, Canada, Mexico, Lithuania, Finland, Italy, Spain, New Zealand, the UK, Ireland … these are all countries with children abducted in Japan! And that does not include the tens of thousands of Japanese parents affected each year.
These parents do not just lose custody. They lose complete parental authority post-divorce. That means they no longer have access or any decision-making power over their own child’s schooling, health decisions, etc. Their child can even be adopted by a step-parent or another guardian without that parent’s consent, completely erasing the parent out of a child’s life.
