Eight lives briefly intersect inside a municipal courthouse bathroom, where moments of privacy become unexpected points of connection. Within the pink-tiled walls of a women’s restroom, strangers confront fear, frustration, vulnerability, and resilience — each one metaphorically stalled in her own way.
Stalled In Eight Etudes unfolds as a seemingly continuous “one-er,” following a series of women navigating deeply personal challenges in a shared public space. With a striking formal twist, nearly every character is portrayed by a single performer, transforming the bathroom into a stage where the personal becomes unmistakably political.

Stalled In Eight Etudes was conceived as a dynamic playground for performers and collaborators to explore character, movement, and transformation. Shot as a playful, seemingly continuous take, the film guides the audience through a courthouse restroom where each woman faces her own obstacle — each one “stalled” in a different way.
Though the film presents a diverse array of women, nearly all are embodied by a single actress. This illusion underscores the idea that while these stories are individual, together they form something collective and political. With the extraordinary talent of the creative team, Tracey Bonner, and a surprise appearance by Celine Jackson, the film became something far greater than I imagined.
