24 December 1942: Trapped in the Stalingrad pocket, soldiers of the 6th Army celebrate Christmas. Of all places, in this freezing icy hell, this doomed army observes this celebration of faith and charity. For the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Stalingrad, BROADVIEW TV documents the downfall of the 6th Army and reconstructs the soldiers’ situation at Christmas with elaborate newly filmed cinematic reenactments.
The Battle of Stalingrad, which saw the death of at least one million German soldiers, Red Army soldiers and Soviet civilians, was the bloodiest of the decisive battles in Hitler’s war of destruction. The catastrophe of the 6th Army came as a shock and a blow, instantly making it clear to many Germans that despite all the propaganda ballads and hymns, the war would be lost. While many back home in Germany celebrate Christmas peacefully with their families, dozens of German soldiers along the Volga Rover starve or freeze to death. Using newly filmed cinematic reenactments and new interviews with family members, the documentary describes how and why the catastrophe took place and the consequences of the war on those who survived it.
