Michael Joseph Vaughan, a 5-year-old nicknamed "Monkey" for his energetic personality, vanished from his neighborhood in Fruitland, Idaho, on July 27, 2021, triggering a massive search and nationwide attention. Last seen around 6:30 p.m. near his home on Southwest 9th Street, wearing a blue Minecraft t-shirt, dark blue boxer briefs, and flip-flops, Michael was reportedly looking for neighborhood kids to play with when he disappeared. His mother, Brandi Neal, had been at work, while his father, Tyler Vaughan, was home with Michael and his younger sister, ordering pizza and briefly stepping away to change a diaper when Michael went missing. The Fruitland Police Department, alongside the FBI, Idaho State Police, and volunteers, searched thousands of acres, using drones, helicopters, and K9 units, and investigated nearly 2,000 tips, but no confirmed trace of Michael has been found. In November 2022, a significant breakthrough emerged when police, acting on a tip, searched the backyard of Sarah and Stacey Wondra’s home on Redwing Street, just blocks from Michael’s residence. Cadaver dogs alerted to human remains, and Chief JD Huff stated that evidence suggested Michael was once buried there but later moved, though no remains were recovered.
