HISTORY OF SRI MATTITHALESWARA TEMPLE
The temple is situated at the Kalluveeranahalli Village of Malavalli Taluk in Mandya District.
Legends say that long ago there once lived a saint who meditated at the place where the temple exists now. During one of his long tapasyas an ant hill grew in the same place and he was unseen to all. It was noted that a cow stood near the ant hill and gave milk. One day the village chief who noticed this opened the ant hill to find a shivalinga there.
Lord Shiva appeared in his dream and said poojas were to be performed religiously every Thursday and Sunday which is a tradition followed till date. The tree under which he meditated was called “Matti” from which the place got its name as Mattithaleshwara.
Popular belief is that people suffering from skin diseases will be cured if they bathe in the water from the pond situated near the temple and if the powder from the bark of the tree is applied on the affected skin.
Every Sunday and Thursday special poojas are offered here and thousands of people visit the place during Nagarpanchami and Shasti Jathra.
