Developed and published by Humongous Entertainment in 1998, Spy Fox in: Cheese Chase is a Junior Arcade spin-off that replaces the series’ traditional point-and-click gameplay with a fast-paced vertical-scrolling chase. It is simple, colorful and surprisingly challenging in its later stages, although repetition and occasionally imprecise controls keep it from being one of Humongous Entertainment’s strongest arcade titles. Rating: 6/10.

The story begins when Russian Blue, the feline villain from Spy Fox in “Dry Cereal,” steals a valuable piece of Limburger cheese from the Museum de Fromage. Spy Fox immediately gives chase, pursuing her across roads, rivers, snowy landscapes and eventually through the air. The plot is little more than an excuse for the action, but the familiar spy-movie parody, silly gadgets and exaggerated villains give the game plenty of personality.

Cheese Chase plays as a top-down vertical scroller reminiscent of Spy Hunter. Spy Fox constantly travels forward while the player steers around obstacles, collects useful items and deals with enemy vehicles. The controls are primarily mouse-driven, making the game easy to understand: move the pointer to guide Spy Fox and click to use whichever gadget is currently available.

Those gadgets are suitably ridiculous for the series. Bananas, pies, plungers and other objects can be fired at Russian Blue’s henchmen, temporarily removing threats from the road. Fuel also needs to be collected regularly, adding a small resource-management element while the player follows trails of cheese toward the end of each stage.

The game contains 100 levels, gradually increasing in difficulty. Early stages are forgiving, with wide paths and relatively few hazards, but later ones become considerably more demanding. Obstacles appear in denser formations, enemies become harder to avoid and narrow passages require much quicker reactions. Different vehicles, including scooters, jet skis and an ultralight aircraft, help vary the scenery, although they do not fundamentally change the gameplay.

That leads to the game’s biggest weakness: repetition. Despite the impressive level count, the core mechanics change very little. Backgrounds and obstacle layouts are recycled frequently, and after several dozen levels the experience starts to feel stretched beyond what the simple concept can comfortably support. Collision detection can also be slightly awkward around the edges of obstacles, which becomes more noticeable once the stages become crowded.

One of Cheese Chase’s best features is Professor Quack’s Custom Level Builder. Players can create their own courses by placing enemies, obstacles and fuel pickups, then immediately play through them. For a children’s game released in 1998, it is an ambitious extra and significantly improves the replay value.

Presentation is classic Humongous Entertainment. The hand-drawn graphics are bright and expressive, animations are full of cartoon slapstick and the soundtrack uses the jazzy secret-agent style associated with Spy Fox. Small touches, such as Spy Fox reacting to moldy cheese or ridiculous crashes, give the otherwise straightforward action plenty of charm.

Spy Fox in: Cheese Chase is ultimately a fun but lightweight diversion. The accessible controls, increasing challenge, amusing gadgets and excellent level editor make it one of the more interesting Junior Arcade spin-offs, but 100 levels expose how limited the basic gameplay really is. It works best in short sessions and as a companion to the main Spy Fox adventures rather than a replacement for them.
