The centuries following the advent of the printing press in Europe were characterised by an overwhelmingly male print industry. Guild rules, social norms, and financial pressures conspired to keep women out of the printing workforce. In spite of these obstacles, many thousands of women were involved in the printing business, with some rising to own and operate their own presses.
This exhibition will focus on women working in the printing trades and the output of woman-owned presses — including those of Mary Clark, Elinor James, Anne Dodd, Sarah Harding, Sarah Cotter, la veuve Mazières, and the completely woman-operated École Typographique des Femmes established under French Revolutionary auspices in 1791.

We are digitally distracted. In fact, over 41% of people find it difficult to focus on day-to-day tasks due to technology. In the era of 24-7 connectivity, it is more important than ever to cultivate digital well-being practices in order to buffer digital overload and burnout. Digital wellness aims to help individuals thrive in the face of technology by offering evidence-based solutions that can help improve efficiency, productivity, focus, connection, and overall mental and physical well-being.
During this talk, participants will be introduced to digital wellness and the link between mindfulness and technology. Lisa Pender will discuss the six key impacts technology has on professional and personal well-being and will provide actionable strategies to manage digital distractions, buffer digital overload, and burnout.
Join Lisa as she shares how building better digital habits, including how to accomplish a digital detox, can help improve your well-being and your productivity for 2023!
About our speaker:
Lisa Pender is the founder of Digitally Well. She is a passionate digital wellness educator, trainer and speaker and is also a contributing LifeSpeak, Inc. expert (on digital wellness. Lisa achieved her Digital Wellness Educator certificate from the Digital Wellness Institute and is a graduate of the Mindfulness in Modern Society program at McMaster University (22). She has been a college sociology professor for over 14 years and holds a Master of Arts degree from the University of Waterloo and an hons. B.A. from McMaster University. Lisa volunteers with the Childrens Screen Time Action Network/Fairplay and lives, works and volunteers in the Hamilton, ON area.
