A big part of my drum lessons involve teaching songs that my students want to learn. If a student wants to learn a specific song, I notate the music of the actual drum part, simplify it or embellish it if necessary, or create my own part.
This video is intended to be a visual aid for any students (not just mine!) currently learning this song. You can download the sheet music here: victorthedrummerguy.com/s/Spoonman.zip
Something I try to teach students is to play through their mistakes. Any time you make a face or stop because of a mistake, it says to everyone watching "Hey I messed up!" However, if you just keep going, 99% of people won't notice. Case in point, the bridge of this song. I meant to play what was on the paper, but I made a few errors. However they were all in time and still sounded good, so I went with it. I'm sure no one would have known unless I pointed that out. So don't worry about mistakes! Fix them in practice, but while you perform just play through them!
Recorded and filmed by Christopher Ghazel.
