Bad episode 45/100
A pretty wasted potential and lame way to celebrate 10 years of SpongeBob. Just taking what is essentially an ordinary special, and stretching it out for a TV movie length doesn’t make it any more exciting, it’s a chore.
Firstly, the SpongeBob stuff, like I said feels like a normal 22 minute special that would easily be more forgiving if not treated like the way to do an anniversary special. I mean they should have do callbacks to previous episodes, like it was such an easy and intriguing way to do that! Like the times they changed the Krusty Krab, Squidward slacking off, when Squidward lived without SpongeBob, but no. We don’t even get any cleverness with these. I mean, we don’t see Jim who was the original fry cook. Now that is inexcusable.
I also just got sick of the amount of flashbacks they kept doing. They kept on and on reminiscing about, really just pointless stuff. The only amusing one was the old 1950’s art style switch up. But good lord, the really stupid one was when SpongeBob “reminisced” about him and Sandy getting “married”. And by that, I mean it was just a failed play. Also, why did the characters act like it actually happened? They were there, and knew it was a play, then act like “Wait what?”, like why are you surprised? Did you forget that happened?
And a lot of things really made no sense, like Mr. Krabs refusing to pay for security for the secret formula, but agreed to secretly install cameras watching everyone around Bikini Bottom? WTF? There’s even a camera in Sandy’s bathroom?! HUH?! And Squidward being happy without SpongeBob, despite living next to Patrick. I can go on about this, but really I wouldn’t complain so much…
…IF IT WEREN’T FOR PATCHY’S HIJACKING OF THE EPISODE! I’m not kidding when I say this is Patchy’s worst appearance. All he does is barge in Nickelodeon Studios, and calls random celebrities (Some of which I don’t even know who they are), and most of the shoehorned in celebrities only get a talk over the phone. Then Patchy kidnaps Robin Williams, and he stares at the camera laughing maniacally like, um…😳Is he villainous now? Only for Robin Williams to get away.
Oh and Patchy was so desperate to see SpongeBob, gets mad when he doesn’t show up, gets eaten by a whale, and we get the only mildly interesting part where we see rejected theme songs of Squidward, Patrick, and Mr. Krabs, and a 1930’s cartoon of SpongeBob. Then Patchy lands back at Nickelodeon Studios, sees a SpongeBob puppet, passes out, and that’s the end for Patchy, I guess.
I mean, this is really how they planned SpongeBob’s 10 year anniversary? And when people do genuinely care about the show and wanted to see new exciting things? The whole thing felt like a scam, especially in the advertisements, where they flat out said they will reveal the secret formula. Like you can’t do that and chicken out. There are people who legit think that can happen, and when they see they were lied to, they’re gonna get pissed and probably boycott the show, including kids. Even as a kid, I thought they would that at any point.
I will say the good things were the songs, the Krusty Krab throwing a huge party to celebrate its success, and some jokes were funny, like Mr. Krabs losing his wallet. But even that isn’t enough to save a piss-poor special. This whole episode felt like Nickelodeon gloating about their success, and it feels scummy.
I say skip this and just watch any other episode that actually celebrates the show in a more meaningful way. This includes anything besides just “SpongeBob’s Big Birthday Blowout”. Like how season 14 did sequel episodes and a TV movie based off Kamp Koral, you know, a spinoff that didn’t need to exist. Not a good sign.
