In this video we explore the chapter Spirit in Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit. In the chapter on Spirit Hegel attempts to work through the opposition between Enlightenment and Faith as it relates to the emergence of the individual citizen of abstract universality, and the intimate communal world of faith or belief. In this tension Hegel locates the problem of spiritual morality in the battle between individual conscience and their simple duty to actualize a virtuous existence. From this battle, or law of conscience, Hegel attempts to dialectize good and evil towards a "beyond" in reconciliation via forgiveness. The reconciliation between conscience in forgiveness gives an intimation of religious consciousness and the manifestation of God in a beyond of rational consensus. Another way of thinking about this consciousness is as a unity of pure consciousness which fully accepts, affirms and loses itself in duality (identity qua absolute difference).
First published in 1807 the foundation of philosophy was forever transformed after Hegel was capable of articulating a higher order understanding of the understanding as the becoming of spirit in history.
This video is based on a 1977 publication of Phenomenology of Spirit which was translated by A.V. Miller with a foreword by J.N. Findlay.
