Libertarian activist and 2020 vice presidential candidate Spike Cohen explains why collectivism inherently creates perverse incentives that stifle productivity and innovation. While tribalism might have once served humanity in low-tech, rural communities, in today’s interconnected world, our tribal instincts can be weaponized and co-opted by ideological movements, as illustrated by Communist nations during the 20th century. The recent wave of American populism on both the left and right has reinvigorated tribal sentiments in various forms, largely in reaction to the so-called ‘neoliberal consensus’. Free trade, balanced budgets, and deregulation appeared to be the ‘settled science’ of governance following the fall of the Soviet Union. However, chaotic responses to the economic and foreign policy crises of the 21st century have upended those assumptions.
