Spello (Roman Hispellum) rises on the southern slope of Monte Subasio, still wrapped in its original Roman walls and entered through three ancient gates — Porta Consolare, Porta Urbica, and the Torri di Properzio. Inside, narrow medieval lanes climb past Romanesque churches, including Santa Maria Maggiore with its celebrated Pinturicchio frescoes in the Baglioni Chapel.

The town is best known for the Infiorate di Spello, the Corpus Christi flower festival when residents carpet the streets with intricate pictures made entirely of flower petals. Year-round, Spello earns its reputation as one of Italy's "borghi più belli" — most beautiful villages — with cascading geraniums and potted gardens lining nearly every doorway.
