One of the three fully rendered illustrations I'm doing as a project for college! This is Grendel, the first monster encountered in Old English epic poem, Beowulf. I wanted to portray him as being distinctly bestial and tough while still possessing human-like qualities (hence me choosing to represent him as a monstrous gorilla-like being). He's described as having a pouch of dragon's hide. And yes, Beowulf does indeed rip off his arm in hand-to-hand combat.
