170 Heart Containers on N64: youtube.com/watch?v=kTJrT5EAUZ8

0:00 - ~176 Heart Containers
With each extra Heart Container gotten, a new heart icon is drawn to the screen. At around 176 Heart Containers (give or take a few depending on the area and HUD), upon targeting or pulling out the hookshot, visual frames will stop updating. This is because when too many sprites or objects are drawn, to prevent crashing, the game pulls from other resources. During moments where the visual frames aren't updated, the gameplay is sped up considerably. The audio still updates, and is very noticeably faster. Once you get even more hearts (around 185 and above), the visual frames will update from less and less things. Pausing and pulling out the ocarina are will show you the action again for the time being. It is worth mentioning that what is seen in this video is identical with what would happen on a real N64, as I messed around with this a few years ago before I even had access to an emulator.

0:50 - Standard Woodfall Playthrough
This clip is done under normal circumstances, note the time.

1:47 - Woodfall Playthrough with 187 Heart Containers
In comparison with the last clip, the gameplay is obscenely faster, including cutscenes. This is basically meant to show that anything that happens while the visual frames aren't updating is sped up, while everything that happens with visual frames updating remains the same speed.

2:19 - No Health
Since health and Heart Containers are stored as signed shorts, their max positive value is 32767. Every Heart Container obtained adds 16 to your total, so after a value of 32752, the value loops to -32768. Meaning, 2047 is the max amount of Heart Containers you can have before the value goes negative. Once you have negative hearts, no heart icons need to be displayed, so the view returns to normal. However, touching an enemy, heart, or fairy will kill you. Using a bottled fairy or potion will do nothing.

3:26 - 1 Heart Container
Once you have negative hearts, you can still continue to get more Heart Containers, which still add 16 to the value. Once the value gets to 0, you die instantly, since your health goes to 0 as well. Note that in this video, I leave and re-enter the grotto before getting to 0 Heart Containers. This is because if you get that heart piece and die while in time stop, you softlock (imagine opening the chest over 16,000 times without taking this into account). Having 0 Heart Containers is interesting in that now using a bottled fairy, potion, or picking up a heart piece will kill you. Getting another Heart Container from this point will bring you to 1 Heart Container, which behaves as expected; taking damage and healing is possible again. While like this, the game always considers you to have critical health, in that your hearts beep, the camera zooms in, and your idle stance has heavy breathing.

5:15 - File Select Screen
Saving with extra hearts will show the extra heart icons all over on the file select screen. With enough hearts, the cursor won't animate, and at 1128 Heart Containers and above, the file select screen will just be black. Be careful though; saving the game with too many Heart Containers (some number between 1128 and 2000) will crash the game upon loading the file select screen, so if you do this on a real N64 cartridge, your game becomes permanently unusable! Wow!
