On Level 8, you probably want a secret level counter as there are 31 level counters in the game. You only need 30 level counters to enter Tier 5 Castle. Using the P-Wing slows you down but you can power yourself up and stomp the red Koopa shell and grab the shell while on the spikes. Make sure you DO NOT JUMP while knocking BOOM-BOOM and falls off-screen with a shell or you will softlock. Press Save & Quit to exit and the retry "R" button is for version 1.13 or higher. Not much other speed run strats and you can't use the Raccoon or Tanooki Mario on Hard Mode when playing Tier 5 Level 1 as you will always start the level as Small Mario. On Level 7 and Level 5, start the level as Fire or Hammer Mario.
On Level 2, there's a frame perfect trick when entering doors and in the NES original, it takes you to the Vanilla World 6-1 coin room which is designed poorly and can get you softlocked until time runs out. It is not a speed run strat.
