In this tutorial you will learn how to Create a Speed Effect in Photoshop CC.
Speed effect is also known as motion blur. In this tutorial we will be focusing on the actual motion blur effect, however you can combine various techniques such as content aware fill, smart selection to separate your subject from the background and add the speed effect to either one separately. In this tutorial, we have already separated the background from the subject and will be adding the speed effect to the latter.
Select the subject layer and go to Filter - Blur Gallery - Path Blur. Here you have an option to change the speed and taper of your blur. If you need to change the direction of your blur, click on the blue arrow and reposition its start or end points. You can also draw additional arrows to further match the perspective of your image. In our case we will only need a single direction motion blur.
To make the subject look speeding in photo, we will be changing the direction of the arrow to the opposite side of the direction the subject would be going in. We would normally use Basic Blur for the background, however for the subject, we’ll use the Rear Sync Flash setting. Change the speed to your taste and make sure Centered Blur is not enabled.
You can also edit the amount of blur the start or the ending have, by clicking on the white circle and changing End Point Speed parameter for each. And lastly, if your image requires a circular motion blur path, you can click and drag the smaller white circle in the center of the blur arrow to angle it. Click OK when done and there you have it!
