Speech therapy is a specialized form of rehabilitation that encompasses care for individuals with voice, speech, swallow, and cognitive communication conditions. “When people hear ‘speech therapy,’ they often think of the therapy children receive in school when they struggle to articulate letters,” says Carmen Bauer, a speech-language pathologist at the UPMC Rehabilitation Institute in Muncy. “But we also cover needs for people who cannot think clearly after an acquired injury, such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, or concussion, in addition to neurological deficits.”
